Understanding Oral Thrush: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatments

Oral thrush, also known as oral candidiasis, is a fungal infection that develops inside the mouth due to the overgrowth of a yeast called Candida albicans. While Candida normally lives harmlessly in the mouth, certain conditions can trigger its uncontrolled growth, leading to white patches, soreness, and discomfort.

Although oral thrush is typically mild and treatable, it can be persistent or severe in people with weakened immune systems.

What Is Oral Thrush?

Oral thrush occurs when the natural balance of microorganisms in the mouth is disrupted. This allows Candida albicans to multiply and form creamy white lesions on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth, and throat.

It can affect anyone, but it’s most common in:

Infants and older adults (due to weaker immunity)

People with diabetes

Individuals using inhaled corticosteroids (for asthma or COPD)

Those taking antibiotics or chemotherapy

Dentures wearers

People with compromised immune systems (HIV/AIDS, cancer, etc.)
